Research Notes

1. Dr. Hermann Brunn, Die Oppenheimer in Schriesheim [The Oppenheimers in Schriesheim] (Schriesheim, Germany: 1977), p. 11; Manuscript, (online)

Mordche Joseph only ventured into the cattle trade after his younger brother, perhaps even at the instigation of his father-in-law. On August 5, 1778, Mordche married Mindel, the daughter of Feidel Lazarus in Rimbach, who specialized in ox trading.

* In the minutes of the council dated August 5, 1778 (SAS B 263a, p. 290) in connection with the handover of the house: "... not only the mother in a document, but also the father-in-law Jud Veitel Lazarus von instead of the absent and wedding son Rimbach signed himself. "

2. A gravestone in the Birkenau Jewish Cemetery reads:
(Zerle, wife of Feitel [of] Rimbach, daughter of Leib of Birkenau?, died 27 Tevet [5]532 [3 January 1772])

Note: Dr. Hermann Brunn in Die Oppenheimer in Schriesheim (p. 12), infers instead that a different Zerle is the wife of Feitel of Rimbach.

Februar 1824 verstarb.*
* So in Berichterprotokoll 1824 (SAS B 246, p. 113).
His [Mordche Joseph Oppenheimer's] widow Mindel took in her mother from Rimbach, who died here on February 28, 1824. *
* As in Report 1824 (SAS B 246, p. 113). According to the registry (GLA 390, 2954), she died on February 23, 1824 as "Zärle Veitel, the wife of Oscher Veitel, a trade Jew who died in Rimbach, aged 88 years".

It seems unlikely that this is the same family, since 1824 is after the surname adoptions, and Feitel had taken the name Kaufmann. It appears that Veitel here is the surname, with Zärle's husband's first name being Oscher (and thus, an entirely different family). It will be necessary to look at the first reference (Berichterprotokoll 1824 - SAS B 246, p. 113) to see if it explicitly describes this Zärle as Mindel Oppenheimer's mother or whether this was just an inference by Dr Brunn.
