Gesel Leizer SHAPIRO (1786), son of Shmuila, lived in Ilya, Vileika district, Russia, and had children: Zusia (1810), Jankel (1822), Gita (1824), Chana (1829), and Bliuma (1833). In 1816, he was married to Dinka (1786) and, by 1834, was remarried to Zernia (1809). Gesel died in 1835.

Research Notes

1. The 1889 New York marriage record of Jankel's son Wolf Shapiro lists his parents as Jake Shapiro and Mine Kaufman. From the 1875 Revision list of Kurents (for the village of Sloboda), we know that Jankel was born about 1829 (45 years old in the census). Assuming Mine is approximately the same age, she would be about the same generation as Josel Kaufman (born c. 1825, who also resided in Sloboda). Therefore, it is theorized that they were siblings and that she shares his parents: David and Zise. Further evidence for this connection can be found in naming patterns. Jankel and Mine had a son named David in 1865 (similar to Josel's son David born in 1863). Also Jankel's son Bendet's apparent first born son was named David, in 1902.

2. From Shapiro family tree

3. The 1900 Census of Wolf and Celia Shapiro shows a first born son, Jacob, 11 years old and born March 1889 (in addition to 10 year old Joseph born October 1889 and 8 year old Sarah born Dec 1891). However, there are no other records of this Jacob, including, most notably, in the 1890 census, which only shows 1 year old Joseph. Therefore, unless there is additional evidence, this entry seems to be a clerical error in the census record and not an additional child.

4. Possibly corresponds to the following family:

Abraham SHAPIRO married Sarah "Sonia, Sofia" SHLOSBERG and had children: Bella (1870), Aaron (1882), Fannia (1882), Joseph (1888), who immigrated to the United States from Russia.
